IN SHORT

This project focused on exploring onboarding as part of the employee experience at Essense. Using a service design approach, I was able to discover and design for the needs, desires and expectations of new employees while also taking into account the organisations values and operations. As a result, a digital onboarding environment has been developed with a specific focus on milestones to achieve during the onboarding phase.

Offering a new hire these milestones and complementary actions to complete fulfills the needs of wanting to have something to do, having insight in what the onboarding process will look like and concrete information on how to familiarize themselves with the way of working

Based on the experiments, a few additional features have been implemented in the environment such as an overview of the team structure and an overview of relevant files, folders and links. These features fulfill the need of being supported in the process of getting acquainted with colleagues and a central place for all important information.

Through the use of augmented reality, gamification of the milestones was explored to motivate and support employees in completing the milestones. Although the technical execution was perceived as a bit cumbersome, gamification showed potential in sparking curiosity and making a list of actions more active and engaging.

LEARNINGS

Being fully submerged in the service design industry and methodology, I was able to strengthen my core competencies such as interviewing, synthesis, ideation and facilitation.

Next to that, I challenged myself more to get out of my comfort zone and try methods, technologies and a way of working that I was less familiar with.  I had a lot of chats with colleagues who were experts regarding specific topics I was working on. For example setting up experiments for concept validation or prioritizing the found opportunities based on customer and business value.
