OFFIS was designed to help office workers communicate their mental and physical availability in a subtle and social way, and staying in control over their productivity and distractions. OFFIS consists of and interactive lighting system that looks at the behaviour and input of the user to communicate the user’s availability.

By making use of both default and manual input, the system is able to learn the behaviour of the user and optimize the output, while the user keeps full control.

Depending on the activity and input from the user, the system can generate 4 statuses, indicating to what extend the user can be disturbed by coworkers. Next to this, the user is able to manually control the status shown, when in disagree with the system. This can be done with the control buttons integrated into the keyboard.

By using intuitive colors and implementing the interaction in an already used object, the user is able to communicate their availability without losing focus. The resulting light can be observed from all directions, thus informing all coworkers surrounding on whether the user can be disturbed or not.

This way, OFFIS helps office workers communicate their need for focus to their coworkers in a subtle and socially acceptable way. They have more control over their productivity, while still adhering to the social construct within the office.

Next to office workers, OFFIS could provide value to managers and company directors as productivity and efficiency should rise with the employees being able to focus better. Also wholesale companies would be able to expand their assortment and offer to companies, thus being able to provide companies with a better match for office equipment.
